Information about The Canadian Copyright Act and its Relevance to Education

As future educators, it is extremely important that we recognize that not everything is free to use. Much of the material that we find online is the intellecutal property of another person. Like the internet, there are also plenty of materials in the forms of books, art pieces, etc. We are priviledged to be able to use other peoples work to support our own ideas, however we are not allowed to claim the ideas of others! It is both wrong ethically and legally. This is why there are legal documents in place, such as the Canadian Copyright Act, that works to protect the intellectual property of others. Though the Copyright Act has much to say about Copyright in its entirety, I have taken some of the main points that I believe are applicable to us as future educators, that can be shared with secondary students. These are important points for secondary students to know when they begin using citations and increasingly using search tools online for assignments. They are in the poster below. In the bottom right corner of the poster are my sources if you would like to find out more information about copyright.
